Getting to Belize
Belize has an International Airport which serves American Airlines, Continental Airlines, TACA, US Airway and Delta Airlines weekly with some flights daily.
You can also fly into Guatemala (Guatemala City and Flores) and then travel across the border via land transfer directly into the Cayo District or into Cancun, Mexico (flights are very cost effective) and then either grab a shuttle or bus to Belize.
Once you are in Belize then 90% of the options to get here are via land. From the Belize International Airport and Belize City the distance to San Ignacio Town, the hub of the Cayo's Districts tourism is approximately 70 miles and by private vehicle takes about 2 hours.
Various options to get to Cayo once in Belize.
1. Grab the Bus - While this is the most economical option it is definitely not the easiest or most comfortable. If you are on a budget then this may best work for you. If you arrive at the International Airport then you will have to take a taxi US$25 to Belize city to get to the bus terminal and from there jump on a bus to Cayo.
2. Get a Taxi - Airport and Belize City Taxi's are plentiful if you arrive without making prior arrangements for transportation. For a single person or couple it may work out to be too expensive and your best option would be to reserve ahead of time transportation services.
3. Book a Shuttle - There are a few shuttle service running from Belize City and Belize Airport to the Cayo District and is a fraction of the cost for private transfers. You can usually reserve with a shuttle company prior to arrival. This has now become the most popular transportation option for persons looking to save on cost while still trying to get a comfortable mode of transportation.
4. Private Transfers - These are usually common for larger parties of 4 or more and can be pre-booked through a resort/hotel or direct with a transportation company. Prices are affordable in most instances. The advantage of private transfer over shuttles is the no wait time once you have arrived and cleared customs and immigration.
5. Car Rentals - There are many car rental agencies available especially at the International Airport and it makes for an effective mode of personalized transportation once inland. If you are comfortable with driving yourself and want to explore the area on your own then this would be the perfect option.
6. Private Airplane Charter - This is the least used option to get to Cayo due to its higher cost option and the smaller planes used. With a group of six or seven however it can be a economical option to fly into Central Farm in Cayo and then be shuttled from their to your destination. A few hotels also have their own airstrips.
